Top 10 Questions for Potential Interns

Thanksgiving is almost here. Christmas is quickly approaching. That means we should be thinking about summer. Yes, finalizing our summer plans should be done before Christmas at the latest. That brings us to today’s list. Are you considering having an intern for the summer? The next year? If so, here is a list of questions to consider using during the interview process. The longer you are going to have the intern on staff the more important these responses will become.

10. Have you ever been arrested?

Certainly this is a no-brainer … but it is a must-ask question. While being arrested may not disqualify an applicant, it should certainly be discussed in detail.

9. What is your favorite sport to play?

This was shared with me by a friend who owns the local DQ. The answer to this question will give you a glimpse into the psyche and whether or not they are a team player.

8. What is your greatest weakness?

OK, another obvious question, but again, it’s information you should have when making your decision.

7. What are your expectations for this internship?

If the goal is a good experience for both the intern and the ministry leader, this is a must-know.  Unrealized expectations can cripple the ministry and damage relationships.

6. Who is your ministry role model?

Wow! This will tell us a lot about the applicant. If their response does not line up with your goals and vision for the ministry, that is a red flag!

5. How is a person born-again?

Anyone desiring to lead children or teens must be able to share this in a simple, concise manner. Of course, we can help teach them how to share their faith.

4. How did you come to know Christ?

One more of the must-haves to serve in ministry—a personal relationship with Christ.

3. Why do you want to serve in ministry?

This will tell us a lot about the individual and his or her potential fit.

2. What are you spiritual gifts?

Look for gifts you don’t have to help create a balanced team.

1. How would you describe your relationship with God?

Look for honesty and transparency!

So, what do you think? What questions would you add to the list? What is your intern interview process like? Leave a comment and let us know.
