Insights from Church Planting, Patrick and Carter

I am speaking at the churchplanters.com conference in Atlanta, GA. 8 of our potential church planters and campus pastors are here with me. I love these guys. It’s probably more exciting just being with them than being at the conference.

Here are a few selected quotes from some of the sessions:

Darrin Patrick:

  • You are only as mature as your weakest spiritual fruit.
  • Religious authorities to John Bunyan as they put him in prison for preaching the Gospel: “If you keep preaching free salvation in Jesus based on his performance and not on theirs, Christians are going to do whatever they want.” Bunyan’s response: “If I keep preaching free salvation in Jesus based on his performance and not on theirs, Christians are going to do whatever He wants.” (What He wants and they want become the same!)
  • Paul equates the “desires of the flesh” to“being under the law.” The essence of ‘the flesh’ = because of my great performance in this area you should approve of me.” If you have attendance/offering righteousness issues, you are under the law and the flesh.
  • For some, your flesh makes you feel “worthy” when you are top of your class; for others when they are morally superior; for others in the midst of sex.
  • The question: What is my flesh trying to get me to focus on beside Jesus that I look to it as my righteousness, hope and refuge?

Matt Carter:

  • Are you more passionate about ministry or Jesus?
  • A better question than “How many did you baptizelast year?” is “When did the Gospel make you, personally, weep?”
