LifeWay: Pastors' Salaries Steady with Inflation

In a study conducted by LifeWay Research of full-time Southern Baptist senior pastors, the average compensation including salary and housing rose 0.78% between 2008–2010, slightly higher than the compounded inflation rate for that period. However, the study also revealed that fewer churches provide health insurance benefits for their staff, saying the cost of medical care rose more than 6% during that same period. Scott McConnell, associate director of LifeWay, said while many churches kept base pay increases to a minimum, they increased care for their pastors by increasing spending on benefits. Robert Henry, director for GuideStone Financial Resources, commended the SBC for “digging deeply into their pockets to support their pastors during these challenging times.”
