Find Your Divine Design

In our culture today, we’re literally a click away from watching another pastor or seeing what another church is doing. It can be easy for us to allow our inspiration to be influenced by what we see others doing, especially if who we’re taking cues from those who appear to be “successful.” We think that we need to act, dress, or behave like these “successful” leaders so that we too may be perceived as having the same level of accomplishment.

The problem, of course, is that God has shaped us all uniquely. Just take a quick look at 1 Corinthians 12, and it’s easy to see how our uniqueness is important to the church. Though there may be some leadership principles or tactics we can learn from others, we shouldn’t try to become like someone else.

At the same time, some of us value our uniqueness too much. We may think what we’re doing is the right thing, or our methods are the best. When we see leaders or churches acting differently, our pride inflates, and we judge the character of someone else’s or another church’s uniqueness. I know I’ve seen many conversations online centered around certain “personalities” or churches, and unfortunately, these conversations tend to focus on how different their methods are from our own. These leaders must be attention seeking or outrageous. If God has wired these leaders to be more outgoing and they attempted to reverse their wiring and be soft-spoken, that would be going against God’s design for them.

As Christ-followers, we take steps in our faith to become more like Christ. But I also believe that we’re also supposed to become more of who God designed us to be and to help others also find and embrace their own uniqueness.
