Obama Pledges New Effort Against Human Trafficking

At the Clinton Global Initiative in New York on Tuesday, President Barack Obama announced that he signed an executive order earlier that day intending to further engage his administration against “the injustice, the outrage” of human trafficking. Calling it “modern slavery,” Obama listed different forms of human trafficking, including the forcing of people to fight in wars, work under poor conditions, or prostitute themselves.

According to The Christian Post, Obama praised the work of the faithful in the fight against human trafficking, saying, “We are especially honored to be joined today by advocates who dedicate their lives—and, at times, risk their lives—to liberate victims and help them recover. This includes men and women of faith, who, like the great abolitionists before them, are truly doing the Lord’s work — evangelicals, the Catholic Church, International Justice Mission and World Relief, even individual congregations, like Passion City Church in Atlanta, and so many young people of faith who’ve decided that their conscience compels them to act in the face of injustice.”

Obama’s executive order included provisions for training and guidance to federal prosecutors, law enforcement, immigration judges, commercial transportation officials, and educators. It also expands services and assistance to trafficking victims and requires compliance measures within federal contracts and subcontracts.
