Obama: There's "No Good Reason" for a Ban on Same-Sex Marriage

President Barack Obama’s administration submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court late last week urging them to strike down California’s Proposition 8 defining marriage as between a man and a woman. According to The Christian Post, Obama told a reporter at a press conference at the White House on Friday that Calfornia has “no good reason” for banning same-sex marriage and they should “treat everybody fairly, let’s treat everybody equally.” Obama also said his administration was becoming involved in California’s Proposition 8, passed in 2008, because it was found unconstitutional.

“… when the Supreme Court asks, do you think that the California law, which doesn’t provide any rationale for discriminating against same-sex couples other than just the notion that, well, they’re same-sex couples, if the Supreme Court asks me or my Attorney General or Solicitor General, do we think that meets constitutional muster, I felt it was important for us to answer that question honestly — and the answer is no,” Obama told reporters.

Obama took the presidential office initially supporting civil unions but not same-sex marriage. He has since changed his mind in support of its legalization. The Proposition 8 case before the Supreme Court will begin March 26. The Supreme Court will also consider a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being between one man and one woman at the federal level.
