Book Review: The Quotable Chesterton

One of my goals for this blog for the upcoming year is have more reviews of books, music, and movies. My friend Alex told me about some websites that send you a book for free in exchange for a review on your blog. On such blog is www.booksneeze.com. I thought to myself, this is a great idea. I accomplish my goals and get a free book in the process. Perfect relationship. If you have a blog, be sure to check them out.

The book I selected was a compilation of quotes and thoughts from G. K. Chesterton entitled The Quoteable Chesterton by Kevin Belmonte. I’m familiar with Chesterton from previous readings, but finding a concise volume of his quotes was certainly an interesting read. Chesterton has the rare ability to combine thought-provoking spiritual musings with tongue-in-cheek conclusions that are never off-color or inappropriate. To be honest, I learned a great deal about humor from Chesterton in this selection of writings. Some quotations leave you anticipating the climax of the punch line only to be surprised by his wording and cleverness. Anything from cheese to creation and free will to poets is covered in this book. The book is arranged alphabetically by topic, so its easy to find his thoughts on a certain topic if you wish to use this book as a reference book. I couldn’t put it down and read it from cover to cover just to hear his thoughts on such a wide variety of topics. It is my firm belief that a selection of Chesterton’s writings should be a staple in anyone’s library, but this conclusive selection of his thoughts would definitely suffice.

If you are interested you could purchase the book for a cool $10 here.

Even if you don’t read this, find something to read in its place.
