I was the senior pastor in our Santarem church in the Amazon for about 24 years. The church had grown very, very much and was also the mother church to over 400 other churches in the Amazon region. I knew, however, that I had a church-planting missionary call burning in my heart. So very lovingly I explained to the church that I was planning on taking a large team (about 35 families plus a few single missionaries) to a city about 2000 kilometers away.
It wasn’t easy for me, my family, nor for our precious church members. I explained to them that I would still be there with them often, but that most of all we would be together for all eternity in heaven. In this short pilgrimage that we have on earth, we have to give our lives to reach the unreached–making disciples of the nations.
After that last Sunday, and after the multiple services, as we were hugging the multitudes of people and telling them goodbye, one thing really caught my atention: Almost everyone of them would say, “Pastor, I am going to become a missionary also!!” I was so amazed. The Santarem church has over 56,000 people now, but what is even more exciting is that literally thousands of them plan on becoming cross-cultural missionaries!!
I felt that the Lord showed me why this was happening: Sheep follow the shepherd. If the shepherd becomes a missionary, then they will want to become missionaries! I am not proposing that all senior pastors leave the church they are pastoring and become missionaries in another city or country. What I am saying is that the senior pastor’s HEART will eventually be reproduced in the members of the congregation.
As the senior pastor becomes more and more passionately involved in missions at all levels (local, regional, cross-cultural), the congregation will follow him. I met a pastor who went with his people on a short missionary trip to a nearby town, evangelized on the streets, helped the poor, and helped plant a new church. That church did an incredible job of mobilizing missionaries and promoting missions. Why? The main secret is that he didn’t just send them, he practiced what he preached and participated in missions. Maybe the senior pastor can’t lead all of the short-term mission trips, but he definitely can be involved in a few of them.
Another idea is to pray for different unreached people groups in the big prayer meetings and the cell-group meetings. I know one church that prayed for missions every Sunday during the celebration service. The church put a different national flag at the front and the senior pastor prayed for that particular nation.
If you are a senior pastor I challenge you to seek God on how you can become a missionary role-model to your congregation. By faith, I already see your church as a “missionary church” !!

Yo sabía, que como fuera, tenía que plantar iglesias misioneras y ese llamado quemaba en mi corazón. Así que con mucho amor, explique a una iglesia lo que estaba planeando y era en tomar un gran equipo (aproximadamente 35 familias, mas unos misioneros solteros) a una ciudad que estaba a 2000 kilómetros de distancia.
No fue fácil para mi, para mi familia, ni siquiera para mis preciados miembros de la iglesia. Les explique que estaría allí con ellos a menudo, pero lo más importante es que todos estaríamos juntos en el cielo por la eternidad. En este corto peregrinaje que estamos en la tierra, tenemos que dar nuestras vidas para alcanzar lo no alcanzado, que es hacer discípulos para las naciones.

No estoy proponiendo a todos los Pastores que dejen sus iglesias que pastorean y se conviertan en misioneros en otra ciudad o país. Lo que estoy diciendo es que el Corazón de los Pastores eventualmente reproducirá miembros en la congregación.
Como Pastor te conviertes mas y mas apasionado al involucrarte en las misiones a todos los niveles (Local, Regional, Multicultural), la congregación lo seguirá. Yo conocí un Pastor que fue con sus miembros en un corto viaje misionero a una ciudad cercana, evangelizaron en las calles, ayudaron a los pobres, y ayudaron a plantar una nueva Iglesia. Esa iglesia hizo un trabajo increíble al movilizar misionero y promocionar las misiones. ¿Por qué? El secreto principal no fue solo que los envió, sino también que él practico lo que predicaba y participó en las misiones. Tal vez el Pastor no puede dirigir un corto viaje de misiones, pero el definitivamente puede involucrarse en algunos de ellos.
Otra idea es el orar por diferentes grupos de personas que no han sido alcanzados, en las grandes oraciones de la celebración y en las reuniones de los grupos celulares. Yo conozco una iglesia que ora por las misiones cada domingo durante el servicio. Esta iglesia pone una bandera de una nación diferente al frente y el Pastor ora por esta nación en particular.
Si tu eres Pastor, Te reto a que busques de Dios para ver como tú puedes llegar a ser un misionero modelo para tu congregación. Por Fe, Yo veo tu iglesia como una “Iglesia Misionera”
