There is no doubt that the first century Mediterranean culture was strongly oriented toward the group (collective culture) rather than to the individual. Today the opposite is happening in many societies: individualism is the hallmark.
Individualism is stimulated by the individual rights of Western democracies and causes people to create life styles that govern everything they do. This means that life in community, which is needed for cell work, faces a culture clash. Rather than stimulating community, indivdiualism encourages people to live self-centered lives. Changing people’s culture is not done easily, nor quickly. At the same time, it is not impossible.In fact, Christianity has changed and shaped cultures all over the world—from its inception to the present time.
Making community a lifestyle through cell minstry will not be easy. But if you persevere, people will start to discover the connection between community life and the teachings of the Gospel. Perhaps we will have to wait for the next generation to see a change in cultural orientation, but those who start the work today will have the satisfaction of having been pioneers of a truly worthwhile cause.

La Vida Enfocada en la Comunidad

Sin duda que la cultura mediterránea del siglo I estaba fuertemente orientada hacia lo corporativo antes que lo individual. En muchas sociedades de hoy ocurre lo contrario: que el individualismo es el elemento distintivo.
Esa vida individualista es estimulada por los derechos individuales de las democracias occidentales. Las personas hacen una construcción cultural que gobierna todos los ámbitos de su vida. Esto significa que el sentido de la vida en comunidad, que se necesita para el trabajo con células, se enfrenta a un choque cultural que anima a las personas al estilo de vida centrado en sí mismo. El modificar la cultura de un pueblo es algo que no se hace fácilmente y tampoco en el corto plazo. Pero no es imposible.
De hecho, el cristianismo ha modelado la cultura universal. Lo hizo desde la base y a lo largo de un tiempo prolongado. El implementar el enfoque de vida en comunidad, a través de las células, se debe emprender con entusiasmo. Al principio las cosas no serán fáciles. Pero si se persevera, las personas comenzarán a descubrir la coincidencia que existe entre la vida comunitaria y las enseñanzas del evangelio. Tendremos que esperar a la siguiente generación para ver una alteración en la orientación cultural, pero quienes comiencen hoy el trabajo tendrán la satisfacción de haber sido pioneros de una causa que vale la pena de verdad.
