Pastors and Cell Leaders, Rest!

by Jeff Tunnell

Pastors have a calling to fulfill and being loyal to the Chief Shepherd a high priority. The saying “Find something you love to do, and you will never have to work another day in your life” applies to them. They will work all hours of day and night at an unabated pace because they believe they are making a difference in eternity.

This is easily confirmed by watching them, asking their spouse and children, or reading the multitude of clinical studies available that conclude this group of people are often “work-aholics.” They simply love God, love people, and love their work!

Cell leaders come alongside the visionary pastor to achieve ONE PART of the work needed to accomplish the overall vision. They choose to give a similar level of commitment to ONE cell, but they should not be expected to labor unceasingly in this singular focus.

The hard-working farmer (pastor) has his eye on the productivity of the entire farm, while the workhorse (cell leader) has limited responsibilities and is given rest so it may continue contributing in health.

Pastor, you are the leader, give them permission to take a break and relax the cell to enjoy the holiday season. You won’t lose anything in productivity but rather gain the health of the hardest working segment of your congregation. Your work level may inspire them, but they are not responding to the same level of calling as you.

Remember to give them some “extra” oats too!
