The One Thing Every Worship Leader Cannot Forget

More often than I like to admit, I forget stuff.

I forget to bring what I was supposed to bring. I forget to send an email. I forget to communicate an important detail.

Sometimes, I forget the lyrics to a song while I’m singing the song. (Has that ever happened to you? By the way, you might want to share your embarrassing moment over here.)

Of course, this shouldn’t happen. All I need to do is write it down and review my task list. I need to practice. But I’m just being honest … I still forget.

Maybe you do as well. But in this brief blog post, I want to declare something that you simply cannot forget.

I want to shout from the rooftops a core idea for a worship leader that is essential. Without it, you’ve lost your way. Without it, you’re simply spinning wheels.

Here it is. Are you ready?

A worship leader can never forget the wonder of the Gospel.

The moment the Gospel becomes “old news” is the moment you lose your relevance as a leader (tweetable).

Christ has died. Think about that. Right now. Breathe it in. Deep.

Christ has risen. Think about that. Right now. Breathe it in. Deep.

Christ will come again. Think about that. Right now. Breathe it in. Deep.

Wow. The miracle of the Gospel must remain a miracle in our hearts and minds. Without it, our leadership will grow stale, irrelevant, cold and lifeless. The Gospel cannot be relegated to a category with brushing your teeth, eating breakfast, getting dressed or cutting your toenails (you’re welcome).

Remembering the Gospel is not a mindless activity. It needs to be a purposeful, daily act of worship. Jerry Bridges said, “I preach the Gospel to myself every day.”

Every day, gaze in wonder upon all that God has done for you in Christ Jesus. Even if the tears of joy aren’t there. Even in the darknest night of your soul. Even when you feel like doing something else.

Pause.

Reflect.

Worship.

Tell someone about it.

This isn’t just how you remain a relevant worship leader. It’s the only way to live fully alive.

Question: What about you? What would it take for you to preach the Gospel to yourself—to remember the wonder of the Christ every single day? How would this influence your life and ministry?
