The Problem with Prayer Requests

I hate it when preachers make prayer seem as easy as Super Sizing your order at Micky Dees.
Because the truth of it is that I still don’t get it.
I mean I do.
But I don’t.

It’s the weakest of my spiritual disciplines.
The reason why it is the weakest is that most of the time, in prayer, I’ve been taught that it is used to get something.
I think this comes from the “prayer request” culture.
How often does someone request prayer to simply grow closer to God?
So as long as we keep focusing on prayer requests as a time to ask God for something, or to fix something…
We won’t ever want to pray.
Because we will keep praying for healing and they will die.
We will keep praying for revival and our church my wither and die.
We will keep praying for their marriage and they will divorce.

I’m not saying not to pray for these things.
But when we do know that the answer is not always yes.

What I am saying is that if we focus our prayer life on growing closer to God…
This will happen 100% of the time.

It’s better that way.
