The Science of Pornography Addiction

Pornography is a dangerous snare that rewires our brains, creating a feedback loop that is extremely difficult to escape.

    Great explanation. Thank you.

25% of all internet searches…that is scary. When I was a kid in the 1960s, there was sexual deviant behavior, but not so much related to children. Now kids are being snatched off our streets. Can’t tell me there isn’t a direct link. We need to see porn just like a drug. Too much = death.

“Although this video comes from the perspective of evolution, these

people break the power of pornography addiction.”

There are many problems with the import of the statement above, and which will be glossed over and minimized by Christians.

“Them perspective of evolution” is often understood that we are just a bunch of chemicals (that is evolving) and that have NO SOUL. The deadly notion here is that we have no real ability to control what is going on, we are just “wired that way,” we have no ability to change our behavior (or heart), and that the only real solution is to “rewire” our chemicals.

I’m always baffled with Christians attempt to take a decidedly false, deceptive, and destructive premise and blend it with pure and all-sufficient truth. What does not surprise me, however, is the vitriol that is thrown at anyone who points out this glaring problem.

amos8 I have no idea where you are coming from or what you are really trying to say. Can you explain further.

      • amos8

        I’m not sure what you don’t understand…

“Evolution” has the foundational belief that we are just a bunch of chemicals assorted in a certain way that distinguishes us from other assortments of chemicals (rocks, cats, computers, etc). There is no “soul,” or “spirit,” or inner part of humans that truly makes decisions, it is all a matter of these chemicals. So, the logic follows, if there is a problem in a person’s life then the problem is NOT in their heart/soul, it is a matter of manipulating these chemicals (adding more, “re-wiring,” changing them, etc)

All of this goes to blur, lessen, shift, or remove the responsibility of the individual. It may make people feel better, but there is a way that seems right, but it leads to death (Prov 14:12; 16:25). While it may SEEM like it brings answers and hope, it, in fact, lessens or removes hope and truth.

As with most lies, there is some truth to this notion (see the truth in Satan’s lies in Gen 3:1-6). We are made up of chemicals (i.e. our bodies), but THE most important part of humans is the “immaterial” (e.g. the heart, the eternal aspect). The immaterial is the part that drives the body, not the other way around (yes, the body/physical part does have some influence on the inner part of us).

        • Mar Komus

In part I agree with you. And in part I agree with discovered science: the brain really does have some “hard” wiring. But the transformed life reflects in physical ways what is going on in the heart. In other words, there is a very close relationship between the metaphysical and the physical. They interact. We could say it this way: “Let HIS will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

Notice the connection between the “inner” and “outer” man in Scripture:

My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health [marpe: health, healing, cure, sound (of mind)] to a man’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
            Proverbs 4:20-23 (especially 4:22)

A heart at peace [marpe] gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
            Proverbs 14:30

A cheerful look brings joy [samach] to the heart, and good news gives health [dashen: fat; become prosperous] to the bones.
            Proverbs 15:30

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing [marpe] to the bones.
            Proverbs 16:24

          • Mar Komus

Gets even more fun when one takes into account where the seat of intellect, emotion, etc. are in Hebrew thought and Greek thought. Did you know the word “brain” is not in the Bible? (That’s not to say anything negative, of course)

          • amos8

If I had a brain, then I might know that …

Actually, I am a “dichotomist” [inner and outer] and not a “trichotomist” [body, soul, spirit]

          • Mar Komus

Two different ways of seeing the same coin, I suppose. Body, soul, spirit could be subdivisions of outer/inner (respectively). In other words body = outer, soul = inner, spirit = inner. Arguably, though, soul could refer to outer: “[he] became a living soul.” Not so sure everything is as cut and dried as we Westerners like it. But then again, “in essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things love”

      • amos8

By the way, I just came across this quote that is aimed at atheists and evolutionists:

“Be proud that you are a FREE-THINKER who rationally weighed the evidence, and then freely CHOSE atheism over theism. Pay no mind that your every thought and action are nothing more than the FIXED reactions of the atoms in your brain that are governed by the Laws of Chemistry and Physics.”

        I hope that helps…

        • Mar Komus

That’s a great quote! People DO eventually have to come face-to-face with the concept of the plasticity of the human brain. We can be “wired” a certain way, but that doesn’t mean we can’t rewire.

    • Mar Komus

Did you not watch the whole video? This doesn’t bypass personal responsibility for our behavior, but shows that people stuck in the rut can get out. And they don’t need Jesus to do it. (Not that they don’t need Jesus period. I’m just saying that people don’t need Jesus to quit smoking, drinking, drugs, or porn)

  • Tam Song

Describing the physical component to addictive, destructive behavior in no way denies a spiritual dynamic. It’s one facet or variable in the equation. The video maker’s personal belief in evolution doesn’t negate the physiological truth.

One of the benefits of Christianity is not simply forgiveness, but a supernatural empowerment to transform, to overcome, the root causes of destructive choices. (“new creature in Christ…”)

You’re throwing out the baby with the bathwater, Amos8.

Pornography is a temptation that has the many disbenefits described. But the desire for it comes from something further back along the line – not least marriages that need a make-over. I’m not advocating divorce or a retreat into the monastery, but the appeal of this temptation is in large part correlated with the size of the problem it promises to solve.

And further back along the line, even than marriages, it reflects the extent to which our own sexual identity has been taken to be seen as impacting on our real identity. The latter is fulfilled by Jesus, but if we prefer to fight pornography as ‘the’ sin, but from our own identity-vacuum, be prepared for a long fight that will only diminish as testosterone declines

This is a wonderful enlightment about the term called PORNOGRAPHY which

always comes through deception from (Devil) The father of all lies. the Pornography
is like a Strong addiction that leads harbit at which if not with the help of divine

intervention. it finally leads to destruction and death. but with constant prayers

carefulness we can over it. Point to note, the Devil always attack man via these three
weapons called e.g (Deception, Temptation and Accusation) according to the book
of proverb (14vs12) There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end there
of are the ways of death. In order word, devil deceive many bad things promising
them that there is no side effect to it, he blind folded them and make them believe in
lies. But as a child of God we are to watch and pray always because the Devil who is
our adversary is going round everytime seeking for whom to deceive and destroy
thereafter. May God help at this end time.

Peter had been set free to defy gravity but was an over comer only while Jesus remained preeminent in worth-ship. But then the boisterous sounds and other input from the storm soon got the best of Peter and got his attention away from the source of his victory to walk on water. Being governed by our passions–a purely reactive love–ascribing absolute value to something of only relative worth as a stirring of the groin might gain the preeminence over our worship of God.
